I've shown you the fantastic cartooning work of John Taylor, now is the chance to see his new band – AFTERBURNER – with members including Jerry Speiser (ex Men At Work: “Who Can It Be Now”, “Downunder”), John Taylor (ex Little Heroes: “One Perfect Day”, "Young Hearts”),  Martin Walker (ex Crucial Kick) and Graham Dixon (ex X…).

AFTERBURNER currently play good covers; songs with a feel and strong rhythm, so if you enjoy dancing to live music please feel free to come along and enjoy.

Also, please feel free to pass this information onto anyone you know who enjoys getting out and getting live.

My Rough Diamond Child

 Helmut Katterl finally convinced me to publish this little mag with him as a partner. It was a wild ride...

I thought this movie of the mag serves the purpose well as you can pause the pages if you choose to read the rock history of that era.


I want to add tracks that are pertinent to each issue of TAGG, so if you were in any of those bands I would love to hear from you and possibly send me any updates, requiems or current gigs, giveaways for current product, etc..


I've chosen Dave Hole, for it was his 3 piece from WA, along with the lounge room gigs fromMen at Work and The Fabulaires,  putting on my own Saturday afternoon gigs at The Waterside Hotel, featuring Dave Hole Band, Flash Annie and the Floyd Boys, The Dead Livers, Bush Turkys and The Illegal Smiles that inspired the magazines publication.

You just couldn't easily find out who was playing where or when.

THE LAST FLOWERS CONCERT

Due to uncertainty about gaining entry, I made a very early appearance - so early in fact that only those concerned with the show were inside and I was able to observe the first few teenies hurtle to the front row like penguins fleeing a shark, and squeal and squabble for position.

Actually, the place filled up at an amazing rate. I wasn't aware that it was a gig for teenagers (or maybe it wasn't supposed to be) so I felt like a bloody schoolteacher after a while — all this innocence!!! (If only you knew — ED).

Oh well, at least there was a bar for the jaded to lean on whilst the true rock'n'rollers climbed all over each other and enthusiastically screamed   their   responses   on cue.

Anyway, onto the music, (about time too — ED). The Numbers appeared with their new line-up the lovely Annalise free to shake her hair arid strike glamorous poses, but there really wasn't much difference in the sound so it's debatable whether any real change has been wrought — cert­ainly not in their attitudes to the audience anyway. Good pop and much more   accessible without keyboards.

Onto Men at Work…An interest­ing test for a band of such maturity, the kids quieted down during the songs, but gave rousing applause at the end of each.

A few people felt the need to sarcastically yell out "yayo” (a la Police's call and response) but on the whole, they went down very well. Those singles really break down barriers in Sydney.

Last up was Iva and Co, who led us through a familiar set played rather loosely I thought (which was probably better) and were definitely responding well to the energy of such a young crowd.

I don't see how this mob can fail especially in the UK where they'll blow those Blitz pansies away. Maybe the bear-pit mentality of the Aust­ralian rock'n'roll scene does pay off. Those who do survive are fit to do battle with overnight successes who are still adjusting to it.

The announcement of the name change was formally made and after an encore, Flowers marched into a new phase. Who'll rise from the ranks to replace them? . . (maybe this new band called Icehouse — ED).

WORLD MUSIC REVOLUTION

COULD THIS CHANGE THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT MUSIC?

On the 21st of March 2011, Rainbow Music will release a musical instrument teaching system that could well re write the books and expand the consciousness and reportoire of even the most established musician.

An idea brought about the need of a friend's child who has Autism and the child's trouble with reading the traditional music sheets.

The system that has been developed beggars belief in its simplicty of presentation that will have such a thumping impact it will be fealt right across the planet.

I am going to show you a sneak peak at a wall poster that is part just part of a sensational educational package to be released to the public in just a couple of weeks.

GURI GURU TOUR MELBOURNE

Don't miss Guri Guru's coming tour to Melbourne. There are three gigs, featuring at the Black Harmony Gathering at Fairfield Ampitheatre on Sunday 2oth of March, followed by another gig at The Blue Diamond that evening.

 Bar 303 should be a fantastic night in Northcote, as it is right in the middle of the action with a large indigenous local population to support the show.

BONGO GOES BANANAS!

TAGG captured some of the classic events that occurred in the local entertainment industry during the late '70's and early '80's, none though captured in such a realistic manner! 

Another of cartoonist John Taylor's classic caricaturised commentaries of the foibles within the business, this cartoon shows when Bongo Starkey took an axe to Frank Stivala's desk in protest of Skyhooks' booking arrangements.

It was funny at the time and its cracking me up right now.

Frank's a warrior though, I believe he is still out there doing in the club scene at the Trak Nightclub, where does he get the stamina?

I met a fellow called John Leever, the other day, one time Record Industry executive, at his delightful little cafe/bar/venue the Grocery Bar.

John is also a dedicated musician, as are it turns out so are his kids, and these two gigs should be well worth the effort of trekking to Fitzroy Street.

TAGG Mag used to publish most unreal interviews with some of the world's leading artists and music industry movers and groovers.
I'll never forget being raided by the Vice Squad for being the only publisher in Australia to ignore the ban on Marianne Faithful's 'Broken English' album, Sprinsteen and a very interesting interview with Richard Branson just after he bounced back to make his first million pounds.

This opportunity was provided mainly by dint of the fact that I had one of Australia's all time great rock journalists as my editor for most of the mags existence.

Hats off to Al Webb, my first editor, and later Steve Lane.

GIGS of OUR LIVES - First published July 5th 1979

This was the first of the very talented cartoonist, John Taylor, combined with Danny Nash's (RIP) brilliant sense of humour. 

It appeared fortnightly and soon became a must read, if not the first read a TAGG fananatic would head for ... but not just a cartoon, Gigs of Our Lives documented the lifestyle ans some of the activities of the rock elite.

Expozay was Kate Ceberano's first real rock band, playing many supports and holding down residencies at pubs like Macy's.


Fellow musicians, Nick Polidoris, Frank Biffi, Steve Henderson and Johnny Virgona had developed a very tight unit, with a strong, growing following that it was a pleasure to manage.


This pass must have been produced after the Pirate Party on the Alma Doeppel, where Kate did the first set with the band and new lead singer, Lucy Gale, stepped onto the deck stage.


I still have demos of the band from the '80's, that if I can figure out how to get onto this site I will put them up for your enjoyment.


Where do you go to my lovely...I remember Phil Ceberano running around in short pants enthralled by what was going on with his sister, I never crack a mention in the bios
though...hmmmm....

They toured Australia with a White semi with 40' trailer and containers, painted jet black and painted with the Rainbow Serpent down the whole of the containers. If anyone out there has photos I'd love some copies.

Doctor Pepper...

"Standing here in the morning rain sometimes I feel so uninspired" sang the Divine Aretha some years ago and truth to tell sometimes your old medico-cum-soothsayer feels the same way boys and girls.

Often girding his loins against disappointment and despair he sallies forth, rain lashing his ever-cheerful bedside-manner face, to yet another smoky room, dim lit den and rock pit only to surface seconds later, ears streaming with tears (from the smoky haze or from another let down he will not say) to slowly drag his weary self home,  drained, inconsolable, bereft of joy, oh bleak of brain, all drained of brilliance in the drear light of Zoo.

Ah but just now and then he sees something that fills his old heart with warmth and satisfaction and he positively glows as his teeth move in that interminable phantom chewing that  signals  his contentment. This week my little ones he tasted both of the above and he fell down and gave thanks for that delightful duality of existence that makes life so liveable and so god damn awful. Now read on.
